Srinagar

Srinagar, the summer capital of “Jammu and Kashmir” ( Union Territory of India ), renowned for its beautiful lakes, natural landscape, Mughal gardens, vibrant culture and historical significance. Srinagar is located on the bank of Jhelum River at an high altitude of 1,585 m (5200 ft approx) above the sea level in the Heart of Kashmir Valley.

History of Srinagar

It was founded by King “Pravarasena II” in 3rd century BCE and then its was influenced by various dynasties and ruler including Mauryas, Kushans, Karkotas, Mughals, Afghans, Sikhs and Dogras. But the Mughal period was very significant for Srinagar, because the mughal empirer developed many gardens and traditional landmarks during their period.

One of the most famous traditions is the serving of Kashmiri tea especially Kahwa, a fragrant green tea flavored with saffron, almonds and spices.

Places to Visit in Srinagar

Dal Lake

Dal Lake is one of the most popular and picturesque lake located in the heart of Srinagar, and is often referred as the “Jewel in the Crown of Kashmir“. Dal Lake is the symbol of natural beauty, rich culture and heritage of Jammu & Kashmir. The Lake is surrounded by the Mughal Garden and Himalayan Mountain. 

Dal Lake is well known for its crystal clear water, floating garden, colorful shikaras and traditional houseboats. This houseboats and shikaras allow visitors to explore the hidden corner of lakes, garden and vibrant markets with a peaceful atmosphere.

Srinagar

Another remarkable feature of Dal Lake is “Floating Market“, where local venders sell vegetables, flowers, fruits and handicrafts materials from their boats. The lake is surrounded by major tourist attraction include Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh and Chashme Bagh.

Srinagar

Badamwari Garden

Badamwari Garden is known for its almond blossoms and cultural importance. The Garden is considered as the earliest places in Kashmir Valley where spring announces its arrival. Usually between late February and early April, thousand of almond trees bloom with pink and white flowers and transforming the landscape into a picturesque season.

Shalimar Bagh is known for its breath-taking beauty, flowing fountains and historical importance. It is often refer as the finest example of Mughal Garden in Kashmir. Shalimar Bagh was created as a royal pleasure garden where the Mughal emperor relax and entertain their guests.

The Shalimar Bagh was designed in a traditional Mughal charbagh style, it is arranged on three terraces which are connected by a central water channel. This terrace were reserved for different groups – The Upper Layer is for the royal family, The Middle Layer is for the Noble Guests and Lower Layer is for the Public and Visitors.

The Garden is decorated with a Chinar trees, colorful flowerbeds and beautiful landscaped lawns. This all creates a serene and picturesque environment that attracts visitors through out the Year. 

Nishat Bagh

The name Nishat Bagh mean “Garden of Joy” or “Garden of Delight”, It is famous for the Mughal Garden that located on the eastern shore of Dal Lake. Nishat Bagh is the second largest Garden after Shalimar Bagh, it is designed in a traditional Persian style layout.

It consist of twelve terraces, which are believed to symbolize the twelve zodiac signs. Nishat Bagh consist of water system that flow through a central channel and cascading from one terrace to another through a fountain and waterfalls. This system enhance the garden beauty by flowing water, lush greenery, colorful flower beds and majestic chinar trees creates a refreshing and peaceful environment.

The Garden offers breath-taking views of Dal Lake and the surrounding snow capped mountains and the garden reflects the love for nature, symmetry and artistic beauty.
