Statue of Unity is the world tallest statue, dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (1875 – 1950), one of the key leader of Independent India and the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of India.
The Statue is standing at a height of 182 m (597 ft) on the bank of Narmada River in Kevadia Gujarat, India. Statue symbolizes the Unity, Strength and Leadership of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, often called the “Iron Man of India”, because he play a crucial role in integrating more than 560 princely states into the Union after India Independence. His leadership shows, India remained united during a time of Uncertainty and Fragmentation. The Statue of Unity honors his contribution to national Integration and celebrates his legacy as a nation builder.
The Idea of Constructing statue was first announced in 2010 by Narendra Modi (Chief Minister of Gujarat at that time), and the foundation stone was laid on his birthday October 31, 2013. After 5 year, the statue was inaugurated on October 31, 2018 by the Narendra Modi, who was serving as the Prime Minister of India.
Setting of Statue
The Statue of Unity is located on Sadhu Bet Island on the Narmada River, the statue is faced toward Sardar Sarovar Dam which is 3.2 km away from the statue. It is surrounded by scenic hills, forests and water bodies.
Design & Construction
Unity design is renowned by Indian sculptor Ram V Sutar and the Statue is depicts Sardar Patel in walking posture, symbolizing determination and forward movement.
The construction was carried out by the Larsen & Toubro the Indian infrastructure company. The project involves thousands of engineers, workers and experts. It took approximately 33 month to complete.
Why Statue of Unity Built?
The Statue of Unity was built as a tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the “Iron Man of India”, to honor his pivotal role in uniting 562 princely states to union, for creating an Independent India.
